Grant Overview
Enhancing Environmental Stewardship Among Delaware's Native Youth
Delaware’s Native youth are increasingly facing the impacts of environmental degradation, which significantly affects local ecosystems and health outcomes. The state has a unique ecological landscape that includes wetlands, forests, and coastal areas vulnerable to climate change. Tribal communities, particularly the Lenape, are in a unique position to contribute to environmental stewardship while simultaneously addressing their own community needs.
Many Native youth lack access to training and resources that would enable them to engage in effective environmental conservation practices. The complex relationship with land and natural resources within these communities necessitates culturally relevant educational initiatives to stimulate awareness and action. Without such training, critical knowledge and traditional practices risk being lost.
This funding initiative proposes to implement environmental stewardship training workshops for Delaware's Native youth, focusing on sustainability and conservation. Participants will engage in hands-on activities that promote understanding of local ecosystems, while collaborating on community projects aimed at addressing environmental issues. The initiative will aim for measurable outcomes by assessing participants' knowledge of environmental practices pre- and post-training, alongside community impact assessments post-project.
Moreover, collaborations with local environmental organizations will enhance resource availability and create networks that empower Native youth. By emphasizing stewardship, Delaware not only addresses environmental crises but also fosters a sense of responsibility and pride among its Native youth, ensuring sustainable practices thrive for future generations.
