Grant Overview
Delaware's urban areas face significant challenges related to food insecurity, with many low-income neighborhoods lacking access to fresh produce. Our Food Justice Through Urban Agriculture initiative aims to address this challenge by transforming vacant lots into urban gardens. Who Should Apply in Delaware? Non-profit organizations and government agencies with experience in urban agriculture are eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to provide training on sustainable agriculture practices and create a cooperative model to distribute harvests within low-income neighborhoods. Delaware's Urban Agriculture Opportunities Unlike neighboring states, Delaware's small size and dense population make urban agriculture a critical component of food justice efforts. Our initiative prioritizes areas with high concentrations of food deserts, such as the Wilmington region. By providing access to fresh produce and promoting community self-sufficiency, we aim to improve community health and well-being. Key outcomes will be measured by the quantities of food produced and distributed. Delaware's Risk Management Challenges The state's dense population and urban infrastructure create unique risk management challenges, particularly related to food safety and distribution. Our initiative will work with local health agencies to identify areas for improvement and provide resources to support risk management efforts.
