Grant Overview

Delaware's African American history is a vital part of the state's cultural heritage. Unlike neighboring Pennsylvania, Delaware's African American history is characterized by a unique blend of rural and urban experiences. Who is eligible to apply in Delaware? Charitable organizations, nonprofit educational institutions, and local historical societies are eligible to apply for funding, with priority given to projects that demonstrate collaboration with local African American organizations. The application requires a detailed plan for the production and delivery of markers, as well as a clear understanding of Delaware's African American history. ## Marking Delaware's African American Heritage ## The funding will support the installation of markers that represent significant events and figures in Delaware's African American history. By collaborating with local historical societies, the project will document and commemorate underrepresented narratives that have shaped the state. ## Delaware's Historical Preservation Efforts ## State-specific criteria include a demonstrated understanding of Delaware's African American history and a clear plan for integrating markers into school curricula and community programs. Three state anchors are: the state's small size, with a total area of just over 2,500 square miles; the significant corporate presence, with many major companies headquartered in Wilmington; and the diverse cultural heritage, with over 20% of the population identifying as African American. Delaware's historic sites, such as the First State National Historical Park, will be prioritized due to their high cultural significance.
